Environment Committee to focus on management of housing associations

30 Sep 2013, 14:16

The Management and operation of Housing Associations will be on the agenda of the Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht tomorrow, Tuesday, 1st October 2013.

Coming before the Committee tomorrow to discuss the issue are: Dr Michelle Norris, Chair, Housing Finance Agency; Brian O’Gorman, CEO, Clúid Housing Association; and representatives from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.

Michael McCarthy, Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, said: “Housing associations are independent not-for-profit organisations that provide rented housing for people who cannot afford to buy or rent in the private market. Tomorrow, we will consider the management and operation of housing associations in Ireland in greater detail when we meet with Dr Michelle Norris of the Housing Finance Agency; Departmental representatives; and Brian O’Gorman from the Clúid Housing Association who has been invited to give the perspective of one of the many bodies doing work in this area. Among the issues we hope to address tomorrow are the governance and regulation for housing associations. Unlike other jurisdictions, voluntary social housing remains unregulated in Ireland.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 at 2.15pm on Tuesday, 1st October 2013.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
