Jobs Committee to discuss youth emigration with NYCI

30 Sep 2013, 12:16

The impact of emigration on young people will be the focus of the Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation tomorrow, Tuesday, 1st October 2013 when it meets with representatives from the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) to discuss its report Time to Go?

The report, which was launched earlier this year, explores the experience and impact of emigration on Ireland’s youth.

Committee Chairman Damien English TD said: “News this month that Ireland officially emerged out of recession and the recent job announcements by companies looking to set up business in the country are positive signs for our economy. Nevertheless we must continue to work on understanding and creating policies that will tackle the high levels of unemployment and emigration Ireland faces. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to discuss the impact of emigration on young people with the National Youth Council of Ireland. Its study provides an insight into the opportunities and difficulties faced by young emigrants in Canada, the UK and beyond. Our meeting provides a forum to consider the report in greater detail and discuss its findings and recommendations. We will be interested in hearing from NYCI representatives on the various policy responses they feel may help deal with the issue and support young emigrants. Committee members will also have a chance to raise any issues they may have in relation to emigration.”

Before it meets with the NYCI, the Committee will carry out scrutiny of EU legislative proposals arising under Horizon 2020 - the new EU Research and Innovation Funding Programme (2014-2020) with a budget of €70 billion:
