Justice Committee to discuss EU matters with Minister Shatter

1 Oct 2013, 14:50

The achievements of the Irish Presidency in the Justice and Home Affairs area and the forthcoming Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting will be on the agenda of the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality tomorrow, 2nd October 2013 when it meets with Minister for Justice and Equality Alan Shatter TD.

Committee Chairman David Stanton TD said: “After what has been generally accepted as very successful EU Presidency, it is both timely and fitting that we receive a briefing from the Minister for Justice and Equality on the achievements of the Irish Presidency in the Justice and Home Affairs area. In particular, we’ll be interested in receiving an update on the Data Protection Package which comprises a regulation on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data and a directive on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data for the purposes of prevention, investigation, detection or prosecution of criminal offences. Tomorrow’s meeting is an opportunity for Members to discuss this and other work carried out during Ireland’s Presidency in relation to justice and home affairs.

Our Committee meeting tomorrow is also a valuable opportunity to explore key priorities with Minister Shatter in advance of the forthcoming Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting on the 7th and 8th October. Among the issues which the Council will focus on are: the ‘one-stop-shop’ for dealing with data protection complaints under the proposed General Data Protection Regulation; the proposed directive on the protection of the Euro and other currencies against counterfeiting; and a proposal for a Council Regulation on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 9.30am on Wednesday, 2nd October 2013.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
