1 Oct 2013, 16:15

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications meets with officials from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport for a discussion on the latest EU legislative proposals within the Department’s remit in 2012.

Tom O’Mahony, Secretary General, Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport will be joined by colleagues to outline developments in EU legislative developments. Separately, the Committee will also be briefed by Department Officials on COM(2013)296, which sets out to establish a framework on market access to port services and financial transparency of ports.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “The Programme for Government tasked Oireachtas Committees with ensuring full scrutiny of EU draft proposals, proper transposition of EU legislation and for holding the Government accountable for the decisions it takes in Brussels. In order to gain an insight into the overall developments in EU legislation, the Secretaries General of government Departments are invited to meetings of Joint Committees to discuss their Department’s six-monthly reports.

“Tomorrow, we will hear from the Secretary General at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, who will discuss both six-monthly reports from 2012 in this meeting.  The purpose of such meetings is to encourage meaningful debate about the impact of EU legislation and other related developments for Ireland.”

Also at tomorrow’s meeting, the Committee will consider EU legislative proposals COM(2013)503, COM(2012)569, COM(2013)79 and COM(2013)302.

The meeting commences at 9:30 am tomorrow Wednesday 2 October in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Committee proceedings will be followed live here
