Transport Committee to meet Minister for briefing on upcoming EU meeting

8 Oct 2013, 11:26

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications meets Minister Leo Varadkar TD tomorrow for a briefing in advance of an upcoming Council of Ministers meeting.

8 October 2013

The meeting in Luxembourg is expected to cover progress on air passengers’ rights, a common European air traffic control system as well as railway safety.

Under the Lisbon Treaty the role of National Parliaments has been enhanced.  In that context, and under its terms of reference, the Committee invites Ministers to attend before it, in advance of EU Council meetings to brief members of the Committee on the agenda items of an upcoming meeting and on the outcomes of the previous meeting's agenda.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Our Committee has an important oversight role on the Government’s interaction with the European Union on policy related to the Departments of Transport, Tourism and Sport as well as of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. We will engage with Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar on the approach he proposes to take at the forthcoming Council, which takes place in Luxembourg later this week on Thursday 10 October. It will be an opportunity for the Committee to feed into Irish Government policymaking on Europe in the areas of air and rail transport.”

The meeting commences at 9:30 am tomorrow Wednesday 9 October in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Committee proceedings will be followed here.
