National Off-Licence Association to address Jobs Committee

The Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will meet with representatives from the National Off-Licence Association (NOffLA) tomorrow, Tuesday 22nd October 2013 to discuss significant business closures and job losses and proposed solutions to reverse closures and losses in the drinks industry.

Committee Chairman Damien English TD said: “NOffLA, which represents independent specialist off-licences across Ireland, says that around 3,000 jobs have been lost in the sector since 2008. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to discuss the issue of business closures and job losses in the independent off-licence sector in greater detail with representatives from NOffLA and consider proposed solutions to stop and turn around the trend of closures and loss of jobs. Committee members will have a chance to raise any issues or concerns they may have in relation to the independent off-licence sector.”

Before the Committee meets with NOffLA, it will carry out scrutiny of EU proposals:

COM(2013)471 on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to making available on the market of pressure equipment;
COM(2013)227; amending Regulation (EU) No 7/2010 opening and providing for the management of autonomous tariff quotas of the Union for certain agricultural and industrial products
COM(2013)309; establishing the European Union position within the TRIPS Council of the World Trade Organisation on the request for an extension of the transition period under TRIPS Article 66.1 for least-developed countries
COM(2013)444; Council regulation imposing a definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of ironing boards originating in the People's Republic of China, and repealing the anti-dumping measures on imports of ironing boards originating in Ukraine following an expiry review pursuant to Article 11(2) and a partial interim review pursuant to Article 11(3) of Council Regulation (EC) No 1225/2009
COM(2013)477; amending Regulation (EU) No 405/2011 imposing a definitive countervailing duty and collecting definitively the provisional duty imposed on imports of certain stainless steel bars and rods originating in India
COM(2013)564; extending the definitive anti-dumping duty imposed by Implementing Regulation (EU) No 511/2010 on imports of molybdenum wire, containing by weight at least 99,95 % of molybdenum, of which the maximum cross- sectional dimension exceeds 1,35 mm but does not exceed 4,0 mm, originating in the People’s Republic of China to imports of molybdenum wire, containing by weight at least 97 % of molybdenum, of which the maximum cross- sectional dimension exceeds 1,35 mm but does not exceed 4,0 mm, originating in the People’s Republic of China
COM(2013)569; imposing a definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of certain prepared or preserved sweetcorn in kernels originating in Thailand following an expiry review pursuant to Article 11(2) of Regulation (EC) No 1225/2009
COM(2013)573; imposing a definitive countervailing duty and collecting definitively the provisional duty imposed on imports of certain stainless steel wires originating in India
COM(2013)575; establishing the position to be taken by the European Union within the General Council of the World Trade Organization on the request for extending the WTO waiver on additional autonomous trade preferences granted by the European Union to the Republic of Moldova
COM(2013)583; concerning the renewal of the Agreement on cooperation in science and technology between the European Community and the Government of the Russian Federation
COM(2013)604; amending Implementing Regulation (EU) No 857/2010 imposing a definitive countervailing duty and collecting definitively the provisional duty imposed on imports of certain polyethylene terephthalate originating, inter alia, in Pakistan
COM(2013)652. terminating the partial interim review concerning the anti-dumping measures on imports of certain iron or steel fasteners originating in the People's Republic of China, as extended to imports consigned from Malaysia, whether declared as originating in Malaysia or not.

Deputy English said: “Oireachtas Committees are playing an ever more important role in the oversight of EU legislation. We look forward to considering these legislative proposals in the area of jobs and enterprise, deciding what possible implications these will have for Ireland and what further action to take in respect of these important pieces of EU legislation.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 at 1.30pm on Tuesday, 22nd October 2013.
