Transport Committee to meet road haulage representatives on EU proposal

5 Nov 2013, 15:40

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow meet with road haulage industry representatives on proposed EU legislation laying down maximum authorised dimensions and weight for heavy good vehicles.

5 November 2013

Representatives from the Irish Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association (Ireland) will address the Committee on what they see as the potentially negative implications for their industry of COM(2013)195.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “The EU legislative proposal to modify weights and dimensions of heavy goods vehicles sets out to support more environmentally friendly and safer design. Tomorrow, representatives from two groups representing road hauliers come before the Committee to outline the potential adverse impact of the proposal on the productivity of their members. The national ban on so-called supercube trucks, in effect since last Friday, may also flow into discussions tomorrow.”

At the meeting tomorrow, the Committee is also scheduled to scrutinise the following EU legislative proposals:

  • COM(2013)315: on the deployment of the interoperable EU-wide eCall
  • COM(2013)316: concerning type-approval requirements for the deployment of the eCall in-vehicle system and amending Directive 2007/46/EC
  • COM(2013)427: amending Council Regulation (EC) No 2368/2002 as regards the inclusion of Greenland in implementing the Kimberley Process certification scheme
  • COM(2013)621: amending Council Regulation (EC) No 718/1999 on a Community-fleet capacity policy to promote inland waterway transport
  • COM(2013)622: Proposal for laying down technical requirements for inland waterway vessels
  • COM(2013)429: laying down rules and procedures to enable the participation of Greenland in the Kimberley Process certification scheme

The meeting takes place at 9:30 am tomorrow Wednesday 6 November in Committee Room 2, LH 2000. The meeting will commence with consideration of the EU proposals in private session. The recommendations by the Committee will then be outlined in public session, which can be viewed online here.
