Health Committee to discuss 6th Report of Special Rapporteur on Child Protection

The Sixth Report of the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection will be the focus of Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children when it meets with Special Rapporteur Dr Geoffrey Shannon tomorrow, Tuesday, 19th November 2013.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “Tomorrow, the sixth report of Special Rapporteur on Child Protection Dr Geoffrey Shannon will be on the Committee’s agenda. The report addressed a number of areas, including bullying and protecting children from children; the law of guardianship of children; and child protection and developments in international law. Among the report’s recommendations are: clarifying the law around cyberbullying; treating homophobic and transphobic bullying as a child protection issue; and provision for guardianship rights for step-parents and civil partners. Our meeting is an opportunity to examine the report indepth and consider in greater detail Dr Shannon’s analysis of the child protection environment in this country.”

The meeting will start at 5.15pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House tomorrow, Tuesday, 19th November 2013.
