Jobs Committee to focus on job creation potential of not-for-profit sector

18 Nov 2013, 11:09

Representatives from Philanthropy Ireland will come before the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation tomorrow, Tuesday, 19th November 2013 to discuss the job creation potential of the not-for-profit sector in Ireland.

Committee Chairman Damien English TD said: “Philanthropy Ireland is the Association of independent philanthropic organisations in Ireland, including grant making trusts and foundations. Tomorrow we will receive a presentation from the association on the not-for-profit sector as an industry and its potential for development and creation of jobs. Members will be keen to assess how the philanthropy sector could support jobs in the not-for-profit sector and boost economic activity, while meeting social needs. It’s also an opportunity for members to raise any issues they have on the role of philanthropy.”

Following this meeting, the Committee will meet with Michael Horgan, Chairman Designate of the Health and Safety Authority.

Deputy English said: “The Health and Safety Authority was established in 1989 under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989 and reports to the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. The Authority is the national statutory body with responsibility for ensuring that approximately 1.8 million workers – employed and self-employed – and those affected by work activity are protected from work related injury and ill-health. Under the Programme for Government, those who are being proposed for appointment as chairpersons of State boards are required to make themselves available to the appropriate Oireachtas Committee. Tomorrow will be an opportunity to engage with the Chairperson Designate of the Health and Safety Authority where he will have an opportunity to outline what he sees as the priorities and challenges for the Authority in the immediate period ahead and into the future.”

This meeting will be held in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 1.30pm on Tuesday 19th November 2013.
