Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation to appear before Jobs Committee

25 Nov 2013, 10:57

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD will come before the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation tomorrow, Tuesday, 26th November 2013.

Among the issues the Committee will discuss with the Minister are the forthcoming Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs (EPSCO) Council of Ministers meeting and progress on EU–US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations.

Committee Chairman Damien English TD said: “The Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) deals with a wide range of policy areas including employment, social protection, consumer protection, health and equal opportunities. Our Committee meeting tomorrow is a valuable opportunity to explore with Minister Bruton key priorities for Ireland, including for the first time, Ireland's full participation in the EU Semester as Ireland emerges from the EU/IMF programme, in advance of the forthcoming EPSCO meeting.”

The Committee will also focus on the EU–US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations

Deputy English said: “The European Union and the United States are negotiating to secure an agreement that will help create hundreds of thousands of jobs and pump billions of euros into economies on both sides of the Atlantic. While the EU and the US already trade goods and services worth €2 billion every day, these talks are aimed at securing a comprehensive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) that will be the world’s biggest ever bilateral trade and investment deal. If agreement is reached it would create further growth and new opportunities by eliminating red tape and tariffs wherever possible to reduce costs and open up new markets. Tomorrow, we will receive an update on the negotiations from the Minister and members will have a chance to raise any issues they may have on the talks.”

This meeting will be held in Committee Room 1, Leinster House at 5.30pm on Tuesday 26th November 2013.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
