Transport sub-Committee to meet Minister on Supplementary Estimate

26 Nov 2013, 13:07

The Oireachtas Select sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport will this evening meet with Minister Leo Varadkar TD to consider the 2013 Supplementary Estimate for Public Services.

26 November 2013

The sum involved is €50 million, allocated to cover improvements to regional and local roads. There is also a reallocation of €1 million from savings identified by the Department to cover the estimated cost of the Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) toll free month initiative in November 2013.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “The quality of local and regional roads has a significant impact on the quality of life of citizens in both urban and rural communities in every corner of the country. €50 million will come from Department of Transport for these road improvements. Poor maintenance of the these roads not only impacts on individuals, communities and businesses but the remedial works necessary after such neglect may end up costing the Exchequer more in the longer term. This evening, the Select sub-Committee will have an opportunity to consider the merits of this supplementary funding with Minister Varadkar.\"

The meeting takes place at 7 pm this evening Tuesday 26 November in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.
