Communications Committee Chairman welcomes establishment of online advisory group

29 Nov 2013, 17:18

The Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications John O'Mahony TD has welcomed formation of the Internet Content Governance Advisory Group, announced by Minister Pat Rabbitte this afternoon.

29 November 2013

Chaired by Dr Brian O'Neill of DIT, the specialist working group will consider the emerging issues in the area of online content and its general impact on the lives of children and young people. The group is expected to examine the recommendations from the Committee Report ‘Addressing the Growth of Social Media and tackling Cyberbullying’, which was launched in July.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “The announcement this afternoon of the establishment of this expert online advisory group by Minister Rabbitte is to be welcomed. Over four public hearings held earlier this year, our Committee debated in detail challenges facing individuals, families and communities from the rise of social media, and especially the challenges to young people posed by cyber-bullying and online harassment. Underpinning our recommendations was the need for a more coordinated approach to tackling the irresponsible use of online channels. Consisting of experts in the fields of child safety and online behaviour as well as technical and industry experts, this specialist working group is an important initiative. I have no doubt it will have this Committee's full support in carrying out its work.\"
