Agriculture Committee to consider a range of EU legislative proposals

10 Dec 2013, 17:28

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will consider a range of EU legislative proposals at a meeting tomorrow morning, which relate to fishing, direct payments and the promotion of agricultural products.

10 December 2013

These include:

  • COM(2013)702: Proposal for a Council Regulation amending Regulations (EC) No 754/2009, (EU) No 1262/2012, (EU) No 39/2013 and (EU) No 40/2013 as regards certain fishing opportunities
  • COM(2013)712: Proposal for a Council Regulation fixing an adjustment rate to direct payments provided for in Regulation (EC) No. 73/2009 in respect of calendar year 2013 and repealing Commission Implementation Regulation (EU) 964 /2013
  • COM(2013)753:  Proposal for a Council Regulation fixing for 2014 the fishing opportunities for certain fish stocks and groups of fish stocks, applicable in EU waters and, for EU vessels, in certain non-EU waters
  • COM(2013)812:  Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on information provision and promotion measures for agricultural products on the internal market and in third countries

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Oireachtas Committees are playing an ever more important role in the oversight of EU legislation. At tomorrow's meeting, the Committee will carefully consider the proposals and their potential impact on Irish fishing and farming industries, and decide what further action to take in respect of these important pieces of EU legislation.

“Of particular interest to our Committee tomorrow will be COM(2013)753, which is the annual proposal for the amount of fish which can be caught by EU fishermen from the main commercial fish stocks for 2014. Last month, we heard a relatively cautious presentation from Minister Simon Coveney on the challenges to be surmounted in the upcoming Agri-fish Council negotiations. If the Commission proposals were to be implemented in their current form, the proposed quota reductions would be of the order of €70 million, thus impacting on between 400 and 500 jobs in coastal areas around the country. Consequently, our Committee will devote particular and careful attention to this proposal.\"

The non-priority proposals COM(2013)693; COM(2013)738; COM(2013)764; COM(2013)765; COM(2013)766; COM(2013)767; COM(2013)773; COM(2013)774 will also be scrutinised.

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 11 December at 9:30 am in Committee Room 1 LH 2000 and will commence with consideration of the EU proposals in private session. The recommendations by the Committee will then be outlined in public session, which can be viewed online here.
