Environment Committee to discuss UN Convention on International Watercourses

16 Dec 2013, 10:42

Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan TD will attend the Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht tomorrow, Tuesday, 17th December to discuss the proposed accession of Ireland to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses

Michael McCarthy, Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, said: “Essentially, the UN Convention requires that a State sharing an international watercourse with other States utilise the watercourse, in its territory, in a manner that is equitable and reasonable vis-à-vis the other States sharing it. The Convention requires that States ‘take all appropriate measures to prevent the causing of significant harm’ to other States sharing an international watercourse. Tomorrow, we will discuss the proposed accession of Ireland to the United Nations Convention with Minister Hogan.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4 at 2.15pm on Tuesday, 17th December 2013.
