EU Affairs Committee to discuss Greek Presidency Priorities with Ambassador

15 Jan 2014, 15:40

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow afternoon meet with Greek Ambassador to Ireland Diana Zagorianou-Prifti to discuss her country’s priorities for its forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

15 January 2014

Greece assumed the rotating six month presidency from Lithuania on 1 January.

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD says: “On behalf of this Committee, I wish Greece well in delivering on an ambitious programme for the next six months. Their Presidency is aiming to build on some of the gains of the past year, in further promoting economic growth and job creation, coupled with securing financial stability and more coordinated economic governance.”

“The Greeks are also expected to focus on enhancing civic and society engagement in the EU, through policies and initiatives in response to citizens’ everyday problems, concerns and insecurities. Bringing the European Institutions closer to its citizens is very much at the core of this Committee’s work and we’ll be keen to explore this issue in more detail with Ambassador Zagorianou-Prifti.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow 16 January at 2 pm in Committee Room 4, LH 2000.  Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
