Environment Committee to discuss proposed incinerator at Poolbeg

21 Jan 2014, 14:20

The proposed incinerator at Poolbeg will be the focus of the Committee on the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht tomorrow, Wednesday, 22nd January 2014 when it meets with Dublin City Council Manager Owen Keegan.

Michael McCarthy TD, Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, said: “The Poolbeg Incinerator project has cost in excess of €90 million to date, yet no construction work has started. Last week, Dublin City Council Manager Owen Keegan said a decision to proceed with the incinerator would be made after the EU’s investigation into two complaints about the project. He also said the project may not go ahead even if it survives EU scrutiny. There is also a chance that a scaled-down incinerator may be built which will mean that the money spent to date will have been wasted. Clearly this is an issue that needs to be resolved and there are questions that need to be answered over the costs of the project to date, particularly spending on consultants. Committee members will be keen to explore this issue of costs and spending, as well as getting some clarity on the future plans for the project in its current form or a scaled-down version.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4 at 2.15pm on Wednesday, 22nd January 2014.
