EU Affairs Committee Chairman welcomes moves to open Embassy in Croatia

The Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs Dominic Hannigan TD has welcomed the proposal to establish a new Irish Embassy in Zagreb.

22 January 2014

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore TD has announced an expansion of Ireland’s diplomatic network, including eight new embassies and consulates, aimed primarily at bolstering Ireland's foreign trade and inward investment.

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD says: “On behalf of the Committee, I warmly welcome the decision to open a new Irish Embassy in Zagreb. With a similar population, bilateral relations between our two nations have been traditionally very positive. A delegation from our Committee visited Croatia in 2012 and met with our counterparts in the Croatian parliament. We were impressed at how stability, peace and the prosperity have been secured there in the relatively short period since the devastating conflict in the 1990s.

“Like Ireland, Croatia is emerging from several years of recession, and is expecting to return to economic growth in 2014. The announcement to establish an Irish Embassy in Croatia represents a significant opportunity to bolster trade and cultural links, and is to be welcomed.”
