Health Committee to start hearings on tobacco packaging bill

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children will start its hearings on the Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2013 tomorrow, Thursday 23rd January 2013.

Attending the Committee meeting are:

Derek Byrne, Assistant Garda Commissioner;
Gerard Moran, Assistant Secretary, Revenue Commissioners; and
Gavin Maguire, Assistant National Director, National Tobacco Control Office.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “In November 2013, the Government approved the General Scheme of legislation which will introduce standardised packaging for all tobacco products. The Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2013 will also determine the size and position of health warnings on cigarette packets Tomorrow the Committee will begin its hearings on the bill when we meet with representatives from An Garda, Revenue and the National Tobacco Control Office.  We’re looking forward to getting their perspectives on the various measures contained in the Heads of the Bill and members will also have an opportunity to raise any issues they may have.”

The meeting will start at 9.30am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House tomorrow, Thursday, 23rd  January 2014.
