Agriculture Committee to consider climate change dimension to land use

7 Apr 2014, 16:50

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow continues its hearings into maximising the potential of land across Ireland when it meets with the experts from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Teagasc.

7 April 2014

Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle says: “Over a series of hearings, the Committee is exploring how best to balance four key demands for our land into the future, namely, increasing food production under Food Harvest 2020, offsetting carbon, the provision of clean water and lastly, the protection of habitats for biodiversity.

Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to explore with the EPA and Teagasc how Ireland’s land might be best optimised to curb our carbon emissions. The recent report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the absolute necessity for national, European and global action in the area of climate change in particular and reinforces the importance of these hearings. Building on a previous meeting, Teagasc experts are also expected to outline their detailed work on mapping Irish soil types, given the emerging research on the role for particular soils in sequestering carbon.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 8 April at 2 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. It can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
