The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection will tomorrow consider the issue of school leadership when it meets with the Irish Primary Principals Network (IPPN) the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) and Officials from the Department of Education and Skills.

Joanna Tuffy TD, Chair of the Committee says: “International evidence indicates that the best performing education systems in the world place a strong emphasis on robust and innovative school leadership. Tomorrow, the Committee will consider how leadership in Irish schools has evolved in recent years and where likely challenges in this area in the future lie. The IPPN and NAPD will offer the perspectives of primary and secondary school principals respectively. Senior Officials from the Department of Education and Skills will also present to the Committee on current policy priorities for the Department.
“The meeting will consider how current levels of leadership in Irish schools can be enhanced to better support existing and aspiring principals and deputy principals. Conscious of the pitfalls in confining decision making to a small number of people in each school, the Committee will be keen to explore how the role of middle management in the running of schools can be strengthened.”
