Justice Committee to start pre-legislative scrutiny of Children and Family Relationships Bill

Pre-legislative scrutiny on the General Scheme of the Children and Family Relationships Bill 2014 will be on the agenda of the Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality tomorrow, Wednesday, 9th April 2014 when it will hear from a number of interested parties and organisations.

The schedule for the meeting is:

Session A: 9.30 am
Representatives from the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland; NUI Galway; representatives from the Law Society of Ireland; One Family; and officials from the Department of Justice and Equality; and

Session B: 2 pm
Representatives from University College Cork; Treoir; Family & Life; Gay and Lesbian Network (GLEN); Children's Rights Alliance; National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI); Barnardos; The Equality Authority; Marriage Equality; and officials from the Department of Justice and Equality.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “The Children and Family Relationships Bill is intended to create a legal structure to underpin diverse parenting situations and provide legal clarity on parental rights and duties in diverse family forms. Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has asked the Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality in conjunction with the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children to undertake a consultation process on the Bill’s proposals. Tomorrow, we are looking forward to hearing from a wide variety of interested parties and organisations who have made submissions and carrying out detailed consideration and pre-legislative scrutiny of the Bill.”
