Transport Committee to consider GoSafe summons difficulties

15 Apr 2014, 17:04

Assistant Garda Commissioner John Twomey is before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow to explain the recent difficulties experienced in securing speeding convictions due to reported flaws with GoSafe detection systems.

15 April 2014

Assistant Commissioner John Twomey is head of the Garda National Traffic Bureau. The private company GoSafe operate cameras nationwide, under a contract administered by An Garda Síochána.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “A more rigorous enforcement regime, including the introduction of the penalty points system ten years ago, made a major contribution to improving safety on Irish roads. The 2013 increase in road deaths however is a stark reminder of the dangers of complacency and the Committee has been concerned with the reported difficulties in recent court cases relating to speed van summonses. In the past few months a number of cases have been adjourned due to apparent anomalies in the administrative process in relation to obtaining convictions. Tomorrow, we look forward to exploring with the Assistant Commissioner how judicial and public confidence in the speed van system can be bolstered.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 16 April at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
