Fisheries sub-Committee to hear from estuary and island fishing representatives and tourism groups

6 May 2014, 12:23

The Oireachtas Joint sub-Committee on Fisheries will this afternoon hear from representatives from the island and estuary fishing sectors and a tourism group on sustaining island and rural coastal communities.

6 May 2014

Representatives from River Suir Estuary Fisherman’s Association, the Loop Head Tourism Group; and Donegal Islands Marine Resource Organisation will address the Committee. The sub-Committee’s Report on Sustainable Rural Coastal and Island Communities, launched in Inis Oírr in January, will form the basis of the discussions.

The sub-Committee, comprising members of the Marine, Natural Resources and Gaeltacht Committees, held 17 formal meetings and visited Scotland to assess policy approaches to similar communities there over the course of 2013.

Chairman of the sub-Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “With 29 substantive recommendations, the sub-Committee report seeks to provide a roadmap to ensure Ireland’s seas and coasts are managed effectively for the benefit of the communities that depend on them most. As well as examining how government policy can be enhanced to foster alternative industries and services for such communities, the report also considers how rural coastal and island organisations might better coordinate and interact to effect change in areas such as tourism and island fishing. The meeting will also reflect on the policy options necessary to develop the estuary fishing sector.  This afternoon, the sub-Committee will have an opportunity to engage with a range of organisations on how the report’s recommendations can be best implemented.”

The meeting takes place this afternoon Tuesday 6 May 2014 at 2 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
