Good Friday Committee to discuss role of women in conflict resolution

7 May 2014, 16:21

The implementation of a UN resolution on women and peacebuilding by Ireland will be considered by the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement tomorrow morning.

7 March 2014

Members of the Monitoring and Evaluation Group, established under Ireland’s National Action Plan, will address the Committee on progress in the area.

Committee Chairman Joe McHugh TD says: “Our Committee has visited a number of women’s groups in Northern Ireland and the border region and is acutely aware of the need for greater gender awareness and balance across the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement. UN Security Council Resolution 1325 requires that women play a central role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Tomorrow, we will host a detailed discussion on the importance of the Resolution to Ireland, which has a particular perspective given the experiences of the Troubles.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 8 May at 10:15 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
