Public Service Oversight Committee to meet Ombudsman on Annual Report 2013

3 Jun 2014, 16:28

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will tomorrow afternoon meet with Ombudsman Peter Tyndall on his Office’s Annual Report for 2013.

3 June 2014

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn says: \"This Committee has a formal role engaging with the Ombudsman and tomorrow’s meeting is valuable opportunity to discuss with Peter Tyndall his Office’s newly published Annual Report. The Report notes that the Office received almost 3,200 complaints and Committee will have an opportunity to engage with Peter Tyndall on the underlying trends in relation to public service delivery.

“While a decrease of 6.5 percent on the 2012 figure, the complaints received remain considerably higher than the average over the last ten years. The Ombudsman (Amendment) Act 2012, which was enacted in May last year, brought nearly 200 additional public bodies under the Office’s remit. The Committee will be keen to explore the nature of complaints received in relation to service delivery of these bodies, and how these complaints were responded to. We may also wish to discuss with Mr Tyndall the impact of a recent European directive on alternative dispute resolution for the Office.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 4 June in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. In advance of the engagement with Mr Tyndall, it will consider a Committee Report on the design and layout of ballot papers. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
