Agriculture Committee to hear from EU Commission on land use

4 Jun 2014, 15:54

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow continues its hearings into maximising the potential of land across Ireland when it hears from a wide range of EU Officials, via teleconference from Brussels.

4 June 2014

Tassos Haniotis, a Director at DG Agriculture, will lead the engagement. He will be accompanied by colleagues from DG Agriculture as well as DG Climate and DG Environment.

Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle says: “Over a series of hearings, the Committee is exploring how best to balance four key demands for our land into the future, namely, increasing food production under Food Harvest 2020, offsetting carbon, the provision of clean water and lastly, the protection of habitats for biodiversity. With supports from the European Union so critical to agriculture, the European Commission have an important role to play in shaping Europe’s land mix. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to explore with a range of Commission experts the policy priorities in maximising the use of European rural lands in a sustainable manner.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 5 June 2014 at 10 am in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. It can be viewed online here:

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
