Social Protection Committee to consider case for widening employment activation schemes

11 Jun 2014, 16:59

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection will tomorrow consider the case for extending the eligibility for certain employment activation measures. Representatives from the Irish National Organisation for the Unemployed, the National Women’s Council of Ireland, and the Department of Social Protection will be in attendance.

11 June 2014

Joanna Tuffy TD, Chair of the Committee says: “We look forward to hearing the case for broadening the eligibility for certain employment activation measures. Officials from the Department of Social Protection will outline to the Committee the current state of play with regard to job activation measures. The Department is expecting to spend about €1.36 billion in 2014 on schemes such as Community Employment, Tús, the Back to Work allowance, the Back to Education Allowance and JobBridge. Job activation schemes by other Departments and agencies will also be outlined.

“The Irish National Organisation for the Unemployed has called on the Government to ensure access for unemployed people not included on the Live Register to the full range of employment, training and education supports and are expected to outline this position in greater detail at tomorrow’s meeting. Meanwhile, the National Women’s Council of Ireland will share their perspective on how the participation of women in such programmes can be enhanced.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 12 June at 10 am in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.
