TDs, Senators and friends will climb Ireland’s highest peak Carrantuohill on Sunday 29 June as part of the annual Houses of the Oireachtas hill walk, with proceeds going to CARI.

Over 25 years, CARI has helped thousands of children and families deal with, respond to and recover from the trauma of child sexual abuse.

A variety of hikes for all abilities around the Macgillycuddy Reeks will be led by Mountaineering Ireland. A number of the more challenging hikes will climb to the summit of Ireland’s highest peak Carrauntoohil.

A photocall for the event will take place in Merrion Square at 1pm on Tuesday 24 June, while the hill walk itself is on Sunday 29 June, commencing at the Beaufort Community Centre at the foot of the Reeks.

Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD is chair of the cross-party hillwalking group, which also comprises Deputies Eric Byrne TD and Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD and Senators Brian Ó Domhnaill and Catherine Noone.

Deputy Deenihan says: “On Sunday 29 June, Oireachtas Members, staff and friends will take in the stunning views of the Macgillycuddy Reeks during a variety of hikes for all abilities. This year’s event is being organised to raise funds for CARI, the only national voluntary organisation providing specialised therapy and support to children, families and groups affected by child sexual abuse. Fundraising is already underway for a most worthy cause. The walks will be led by Mountaineering Ireland and we are particularly grateful to CEO Karl Boyle and his team for their continued support of this hugely enjoyable annual event.”
To date the Oireachtas Walk has raised over €20,000 for worthy causes.
