Committee to consider calls for investigation into US military use of Shannon Airport

17 Jun 2014, 14:34

Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will tomorrow consider calls for an investigation into the US Military and CIA use of Shannon Airport and Irish airspace.

17 June 2014

Dr Edward Horgan, Margaretta D’Arcy and Dr John Lannon of the Shannonwatch organisation will present to the Committee outlining their petition.

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD says: “Our Committee looks forward to carefully considering the petition by Shannonwatch at tomorrow’s meeting. Central to the petition is a call for the Government to investigate the use of Shannon Airport and Irish airspace for the transit of US armed troops, munitions and other war material, and for the refuelling of CIA-associated aircraft involved in extraordinary rendition.

“The petitioners have also made serious claims that complaints or requests made to Gardaí at Shannon have not been followed up, on advice from the Attorney General. As a consequence, the petitioners are calling for an independent inquiry in relation to what they perceive as the failure to investigate aircraft suspected to be involved in illegal rendition. Tomorrow’s meeting is an important opportunity for Committee Members to engage with the petitioners on this longstanding and controversial issue.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 18 June in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
