EU Affairs Committee to consider new Framework on Rule of Law in the EU

2 Jul 2014, 12:24

A New EU Framework on the Rule of Law will be considered by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs tomorrow when it meets with the European Commission’s Emmanuel Crabit and officials from the Department of Justice and Equality.

2 July 2014

The new framework, presented by the European Commission earlier this year, sets out to address systemic threats to the rule of law in any of the EU's 28 Member States.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “The rule of law is a fundamental pillar of the European Union. This new Framework seeks to allow the European Commission to intervene in the event of serious and systemic threats to the rule of law in a Member State. This is an important EU initiative, which warrants careful consideration by our Committee. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to examine the initiative in detail with a senior European Commission official, Emmanuel Crabit, and also to discuss where the potential implications for Ireland lie with officials from the Department of Justice and Equality.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 3 July in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 2 pm. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
