EU Affairs Committee to meet Minister in advance of key Council meeting

24 Sep 2014, 15:22

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow meet with Minister of State for European Affairs Dara Murphy, in advance of the General Affairs Council (GAC) meeting to be held in Brussels on 29 September.

24 September 2014

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD says: “We look forward to welcoming Minister Murphy tomorrow for his first pre-GAC briefing to the Committee since his appointment to the post in July.  The meeting in Brussels is expected to consider measures to bolster the Union’s competitiveness, as part of the Strategic Agenda for the coming five years agreed by European leaders in June.  Committee Members look forward to the opportunity to feed into the Irish Government’s approach to the meeting.  The General Affairs Council is also expected to consider a Communication on the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region and prepare the ground for the next European Council meeting in October.

“The Committee will also consider the 'Europe 2020' midterm review with Minister Murphy, which is currently being undertaken by the European Commission. The strategy was launched in March 2010 as the EU's strategy for promoting smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in the EU. During the summer, the Joint Committee called for submissions from the Irish public and we will be meeting with stakeholders in the coming weeks with the intention of submitting a political contribution to the European Commission on this important strategy.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 25 September at 2 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000.  Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
