Communications Committee to meet Department on Eircode concerns

18 Nov 2014, 11:17

Officials from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow to respond to concerns in relation to the proposed Eircode postcode system.

18 November 2014

Capita Business Support Services Ireland, the company awarded the contract for establishing and implementing the new system, will also be attendance.
Next year, a new postcode system for Ireland will be implemented, which has been described as a smart location code enabling every residential and business address to be located. At a meeting on 5 November, representatives from the Freight Transport Association of Ireland detailed what they perceived as the flaws in the proposed system.
Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “A new smart postcode system for Ireland is expected to be launched early next year. With Ireland being one of the few developed countries without postcodes, there is a clear rationale for the introduction of a national postcode system. At a meeting earlier in the month, the Committee heard concerns from freight industry representatives that the system for Ireland as currently proposed would be of questionable value to them. Tomorrow's meeting will give Department and Capita representatives the opportunity to respond to these criticisms. In these discussions, Committee Members are keen to ensure that this opportunity for Ireland to implement a world class postcode system can be realised.\"
The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 19 November at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
