Members of a working group established to review firearms licencing will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality tomorrow Wednesday 17 December. The Committee has recently issued a call for public submissions on the report’s findings.

The Joint Department of Justice and Equality / Garda Síochána Working Group was established in September 2013 to address firearms licensing issues, following concerns raised by the Garda Commissioner in relation to this area and in particular with regard to issues concerning the continued licensing of handguns.
Committee Chairman David Stanton TD said: “Committee Members look forward to exploring a number of issues raised in the Review with Members of the Working Group who drafted it. The Committee has issued a call for submissions from interested groups and individuals on the Review. The Committee will consider any suitable written submissions received and may decide to invite a number of contributors to public hearings should it be considered necessary. We understand that there are differing perspectives on the holding of firearms and firearm licensing and it is important that current licence holders, shooting clubs and members of the public are given a forum to articulate their views. So the meeting with the Working Group tomorrow will inform our Committee as we continue to engage with the wider public on this issue.”
This meeting will start at 10:30 am on Wednesday 17 December 2014 in Committee Room 2.
