The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow meet with Ms. Moya Doherty, Chair Designate of RTÉ and Dr. Pauric Travers, Chair Designate of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland in separate sessions.
Committee Chairman, John O’Mahony said: “As the state broadcaster, RTÉ occupies a hugely important role in terms of both national and global media. Similarly, as the body responsible for regulating content across all Irish broadcasting, the BAI is the watchdog responsible for upholding the principles of a fair and unbiased media. Tomorrow’s meeting with Chair Designates, Moya Doherty and Pauric Travers, offers the Committee a valuable opportunity to scrutinise and discuss the direction each proposes to take, should they be appointed. In a world where media influence on society continues to grow, we as a Committee are keen to examine the ever-evolving roles of both RTE and the BAI.”
“Following the discussion tomorrow, a decision will be taken by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources to confirm Ms. Doherty and Dr. Travers as Chair of RTÉ and the BAI respectively. We look forward to contributing towards an open debate and assisting the Minister in his decisions.”
The meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday 28th of January 2015 at 9.30am. It will commence with engagement with Ms. Doherty and following her session, it will begin discussions with Dr. Travers.
