Health and Children Committee to consider 2014 Report on Child Protection

28 Jan 2015, 12:51

The 2014 Report of the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection will be the focus of Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children when it meets with Special Rapporteur Dr Geoffrey Shannon tomorrow, Thursday 29 January.

28 January 2015

Dr Shannon was appointed by Government in 2013 to report on legal developments relating to the protection of children and assess what impact, if any, litigation in national and international courts will have on child protection.

The Seventh Report of the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection covers:

  • Child Protection and Developments in International Law;
  • General Trends emerging from the Courts;
  • Children and Internet Safety, and
  • Forced marriages.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “Tomorrow, the Seventh report of Special Rapporteur on Child Protection Dr Geoffrey Shannon will be on the Committee’s agenda. The report was published in November 2014 and primarily relates to developments in the area of child protection in 2013. Dr Shannon is expected to outline the recommendations of his report in important areas which he believes will help policy here improve, reform and move towards a more child-centred and holistic approach to children’s issue. Our Committee has been monitoring child welfare issues on an ongoing basis.  This meeting is an opportunity to examine the report in-depth and consider in greater detail Dr Shannon’s analysis of the child protection environment in this country.”

The meeting will start at 9:30 am in Committee Room 2, LH2000, tomorrow 29 January 2015. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
