EU Affairs Committee to discuss Irish/UK economic interdependence

16 Feb 2015, 14:23

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will continue its series of meetings on ‘BrExit’ tomorrow, 17th February 2015 at 2pm, when it meets to discuss the ‘Four Freedoms’ and economic interdependence between the UK and Ireland.

16th February 2015

Committee Chair, Dominic Hannigan, TD, said: “The Four Freedoms of the EU are the free movement of goods, services, capital and the free movement of persons (and citizenship), including free movement of workers. Freedom of movement, especially for workers, is one of the most important issues up for debate, should the UK leave the EU. Restricting or changing the rules on any of the Four Freedoms would require a significant degree of negotiation right across the EU.”

“Ireland’s economic interdependence with the UK is a significant one, based largely on the fact that the UK is our largest export destination. Tourism and the ease of movement between Ireland and the UK also represent a significant area of mutual cooperation. In our meeting tomorrow, the Committee looks forward to engaging with our speakers on the question of what shape a new form of UK/EU relationship might look like - were the UK to exit the EU - and how a ‘BrExit’ would affect the Irish-British economic relationship.”

Appearing before the Committee will be:
•    Mr. Steve Aiken, former Chief Executive of British-Irish Chamber of Commerce.
•    Mr. Alan Matthews, Professor Emeritus of European Agricultural Policy in the Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin.
•    Ms. Siobhan Mullally, Professor of Law and Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights.
•    Mr. Dáithí Ó Ceallaigh, Director of Corporate Affairs, Institute of International and European Affairs.

Tomorrow’s meeting will commence at 2pm in Committee Room 1, Leinster House, tomorrow, Tuesday, 17th February 2015.
