EU Commissioner for Trade to discuss TTIP with EU Affairs Committee

26 Mar 2015, 14:07

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet tomorrow with the European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, to discuss developments in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

26th March 2015

The meeting will commence at 2.15pm in Committee Room 2, tomorrow, Friday 27th March 2015.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), is primarily a trade and investment agreement that is being negotiated between the EU and the US which aims to make it easier for companies on both sides of the Atlantic to access each other's markets and in doing so, should increase economic output and growth.”

Committee Chair, Dominic Hannigan, TD, said: “The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs greatly welcomes the chance to meet with Commissioner Malmström to discuss TTIP. The Commissioner plays a key role in TTIP negotiations and has made jobs and growth on both sides of the Atlantic her focus in the course of these deliberations. The Committee has already engaged in formal dialogue with the EU Commission on this issue after meeting with stakeholders on TTIP last year.”

“Tomorrow’s meeting allows the Committee to hear from the Commissioner on the progress of the negotiations as well as to address concerns that have been raised, including those that relate to transparency and the possible effects on small businesses. Our meeting with Commissioner Malmström will provide an important forum for the Committee to make our voice heard in relation to these important negotiations.”

Tomorrow’s meeting will commence at 2.15pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Friday, 27th March 2015.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

The meeting will also be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV on Sky Channel 574; UPC Channel 207 and eVision Channel 504.
