Foreign Affairs Committee to consider Ireland’s Diaspora Policy

31 Mar 2015, 12:47

The Minister of State for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan TD will tomorrow appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade to consider the Global Irish: Ireland’s Diaspora Policy, which was launched earlier this month.

31 March 2015

The policy recognises the unique and important relationship between Ireland and its diaspora and sets out actions to nurture and develop this relationship, and to engage them.

Committee Chairman Pat Breen TD says: “Irish people can be found in every corner of the world and how we relate to our extensive diaspora is a priority issue for this Committee. The Committee is acutely conscious of the need to reach out to Irish people living overseas to enhance our international reputation and aid our economic recovery. The Global Irish contains a suite of policies to engage the diaspora, so it is a significant advance in Ireland’s relationship with its citizens abroad. Tomorrow, our Committee will have the opportunity to explore the policies outlined in the Global Irish policy document with Minister of State Jimmy Deenihan.”

The meeting commences tomorrow Wednesday 1 April at 10 am in Committee Room 2, LH 2000 and can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
