Justice Committee to discuss issue of undocumented migrants with Immigration Control Platform

31 Mar 2015, 12:45

Áine Ní Chonaill of the Immigration Control Platform (ICP) will appear before the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality for a discussion on the issue of undocumented immigrants in Ireland.

31 March 2015

At a meeting on 25 February, the Committee heard from the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) to consider the difficulties facing undocumented migrants living in Ireland. They outlined their work with undocumented migrants for over 14 years – estimated at over 20,000 in Ireland.

Committee Chairman David Stanton TD says: “The Joint Committee engaged on this issue last month at a meeting with the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, during which the concerns and hopes of undocumented migrants living here were aired. The MRCI also outlined a how a scheme to regularise these lives might be put in place. During the exchanges, Members questioned whether there could be any political opposition to the proposals outlined by the MRCI. The Committee received correspondence from the Immigration Control Platform on foot of this meeting, and the Committee has agreed to afford them the opportunity to outline their opposition to the MRCI proposals at tomorrow’s meeting.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 1 April at 2:30 pm in Committee Room 2, LH 2000 and can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
