14 Apr 2015, 16:04

The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 15th April, to engage in Pre-legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Retention of Records Bill 2015.

14th April 2015

The meeting will commence at 1pm in Committee Room 3. Appearing before the Committee will be Officials from the Department of Education and Skills.

Chairperson of the Committee, Joanna Tuffy, TD, says: “The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection is pleased to begin its Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of this important and historic bill. The Retention of Records Bill 2015 aims to preserve the testimonies of those who suffered abuse while living in institutions during the period 1936 to 2000. Before the bill is drafted, the Joint Committee is intent on engaging with the Department of Education and Skills as to how best to preserve these documents whilst respecting the wishes of both the victims and their families.”

“We must do all we can to ensure that the horrors visited upon these children while they were in institutions that had committed to care for them are never repeated again. Having previously invited submission from the public on this draft bill, the Joint Committee takes its work on this matter very seriously and we look forward to a productive meeting tomorrow.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 3, Leinster House, tomorrow; Wednesday, 15th April 2015 at 1pm.
