15 Apr 2015, 14:44

Pre-legislative scrutiny of the Road Traffic Bill 2015 will be on the agenda at this week’s meeting of the Joint Committee on Transport and Communication.

15th April 2015

The meeting will take place tomorrow, Thursday, 16th April at 2.30pm in Committee Room 4.

Officials from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport will be in attendance, as will representatives from the Medical Bureau of Road Safety.

Committee Chair, John O’Mahony, TD, said: “The Road Traffic Bill 2015 is intended to contribute towards the ongoing effort to improve safety on Ireland’s roads. The Joint Committee acknowledges the work that has been done to date in improving safety on Irish roads, but we are confident that more can be done to reduce the numbers of accidents and fatalities on our roads.”

“Members will be keen to assess this bill in terms of its measures in dealing with hit and runs; roadside checkpoints for alcohol/drugs tests as well as any adjustments to the Penalty Points system. The Committee is looking forward to hearing from our invited guests tomorrow, as well as carrying out detailed pre-legislative scrutiny and consideration of the draft legislation.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Thursday, 16th April at 2.30pm in Committee Room 4.
