Justice Committee calls for submissions on draft legislation to curb repeat burglaries

17 Apr 2015, 12:09

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality has issued a call for submissions this morning from interested groups and individuals on draft legislation aimed at tougher penalties for those found guilty of repeat burglaries.

17 April 2015

The General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Bill was published by Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald TD earlier this week, as part of a broader review of the criminal justice system’s response to the problem of burglaries. Minister Fitzgerald has referred the General Scheme to the Justice Committee for pre-legislative scrutiny.

The General Scheme can be accessed on the Department of Justice and Equality’s website.

Committee Chairman David Stanton TD says: “These proposals are aimed at tackling the issue of repeat burglaries and the Committee looks forward to scrutinising the draft legislation. As part of this process, we are seeking public submissions on the General Scheme, which sets out to introduce stricter bail conditions for those charged with multiple burglaries and consecutive prison sentences for those convicted. The Committee may decide to invite one or more individuals or groups to public hearings to discuss particular submissions in detail. On foot of this public process, the Committee will report to the Minister for Justice and Equality on the submissions received and any public hearings.”

The closing date for receipt of submissions is Friday 24 April at 3pm.
