Communications Committee to meet EirGrid CEO over North-South Interconnector

20 Apr 2015, 14:46

EirGrid CEO, Mr Fintan Slye, will appear before the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow, Tuesday 21st April 2015.

20th April 2015

Mr Slye will be briefing the Committee on the North-South Interconnector. Tomorrow’s meeting will take place at 11.30am in Committee Room 4.

Committee Chair, John O’Mahony, TD, said: “Linking the electricity grids of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is an issue of concern to many households north and south of the border. The North-South Interconnector is arguably the most important energy project on this island; for that reason, the Joint Committee takes very seriously its role in ensuring that the process is as efficient, transparent and fair as possible.”

“There are many issues still to be worked out regarding the North-South Interconnector, most significantly the issue of placing it under or over ground, but securing the energy supply on both sides of the border is recognised a matter of significant strategic importance. Tomorrow’s meeting with Fintan Slye will allow the Committee to directly address a number of issues relating to ensuring that any to development of the grid is carried out in a way that is technically suitable, cost-effective and also retains an emphasis on protecting the surrounding environment.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House, tomorrow, Tuesday, 21st April at 11.30am.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

The meeting will also be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV on Sky Channel 574; UPC Channel 207 and eVision Channel 504.
