Good Friday Committee to consider North/South initiatives in curbing obesity

22 Apr 2015, 16:56

Representatives from SafeFood Ireland will appear before the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement to discuss cross-border initiatives to promote healthy eating and reduce obesity.

22 April 2015

Ray Dolan, Chief Executive of Safefood Ireland, will address the Committee along with senior colleagues.

SafeFood, set up as the Food Safety Promotion Board, is one of six North-South Implementation Bodies established under the Good Friday Agreement. It implements policies agreed in the North-South Ministerial Council on an all-island and cross-Border basis. It is principally charged with raising public awareness of food safety issues and related health issues such as obesity. It also supports North-South scientific co-operation and links between institutions working in the field of food safety such as laboratories.

Chairman of the Committee Frank Feighan TD says: “The Committee looks forward to hearing from Mr Dolan and his team at tomorrow’s meeting on efforts to reduce childhood and adult obesity on both sides of the border. With obesity on both sides of the border increasing at alarming rates, this is a serious health issue with implications for health systems on both sides of the border. Committee Members will wish to explore the proactive work of SafeFood Ireland in its education and public awareness programmes, which includes sponsorship of RTÉ’s flagship Operation Transformation programme.”

Tomorrow’s meeting will commence at 10:15 am in Committee Room 4, Leinster House, tomorrow, Thursday, 23 April 2015.
