Eligibility issues facing social protection payment applicants to be scrutinised by Social Protection Committee

28 Apr 2015, 17:40

The eligibility issues facing people applying for illness-related social protection payments will be on the agenda when the Joint Committee for Education and Social Protection meets tomorrow.

28th April 2015

Appearing before the Committee will be representatives from:

•    Department of Social Protection;
•    Disability Federation of Ireland;
•    Carers Association.

Committee Chair, Joanna Tuffy, TD, says: “The Joint Committee is concerned about the difficulties being experienced by people who are applying for certain payments made by the Department of Social Protection. The process of demonstrating that they meet the medical eligibility criteria in order to qualify for illness or disability related social protection payments is a source of concern for many applicants and tomorrow, the Joint Committee will hear from stakeholder groups who represent many of those applying for payments.”

“Officials from the Department of Social Protection will also be present tomorrow and they will brief our Committee on issues surrounding qualifying medical criteria. We are keen to assist in making this process as efficient, fair and clear as possible and we look forward to hearing from a productive meeting tomorrow.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 3, Leinster House, tomorrow; Wednesday, 29th April 2015 at 1pm.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

The meeting will also be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV on Sky Channel 574; UPC Channel 207 and eVision Channel 504.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
