EU Affairs Committee to continue scrutiny of National Reform Programme

29 Apr 2015, 12:17

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will continue its engagement on the National Reform Programme tomorrow when it meets with Professor Alan Barrett and Professor Edgar Morgenroth from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), who will assist the Committee in its scrutiny of the Programme by their expert analysis.

29th April 2015

Professor Alan Barrett is Head of the Economic Analysis Division at the ESRI. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin. He is a member of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council, having been appointed by the Minister for Finance in July 2011.

Professor Edgar Morgenroth is an Associate Research Professor and programme co-ordinator for research on transport and infrastructure at the Economic and Social Research Institute. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Board member of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and an independent member of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC).

Committee Chair, Dominic Hannigan, TD, said: “The preparation and submission of a National Reform Programme is a core element of the European Semester process. At our meeting last week, Minister of State for European Affairs, Dara Murphy, TD, outlined the Government’s draft National Reform Programme and Ireland’s country specific recommendations.”

“The National Reform Programme identifies national targets for Ireland, intended to ensure our full emergence from the economic downturn. Tomorrow’s meeting with representatives from the ESRI will give the Joint Committee the opportunity to further scrutinise the draft National Reform Programme and address the impact it will have on the Irish economy and on policy-making in general. Once our Committee has concluded its examination of the National Reform Programme, it will be sent to the European Commission for further scrutiny.”

Tomorrow’s meeting will commence at 2pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Thursday, 30th April 2015.
