20 Oct 2015, 16:34

The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will convene tomorrow to conduct a two-part meeting. To begin, the Committee will meet with Mr. Oliver Cussen, Chairperson Designate of the Grangegorman Development Agency. They will then engage with Dr. Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children, on the role, remit and activities of the Ombudsman for Children in relation to schools and their Boards of Management.

20th October 2015

The meeting will commence at 1.00 pm in Committee Room 3 tomorrow, Wednesday, 21st October 2015.

Committee Chair, Joanna Tuffy TD said, “I very much welcome the opportunity to meet with Mr. Cussen in his capacity as Chair Designate. The Grangegorman site is of significant strategic importance to the development of Dublin city. Its location and size offer key opportunities and we, as a key Committee, look forward to hearing from Mr Cussen on the key issues for the Agency.

“We will then have a chance to meet with Dr. Niall Muldoon. The Committee notes that complaints in relation to schools constitute a large portion of the work of the Ombudsman. Many of which are complex in nature and a give rise to challenges and concerns for parents and the schools. This is a matter that the Committee has discussed previously.   We hope that today's session will throw light on some of these difficulties and enable us consider if there is scope for improving the way in which complaints in relation to schools are handled for parents and schools.\"

The meeting will also be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV on Sky Channel 574; Virgin Media Channel 207 and eir Vision Channel 504.
