4 October 2016

The Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs will tomorrow conduct a three part meeting. Session A will see the Committee meet with Mr. Pat Bergin, Director of Oberstown Children Detention Campus, to hear an overview of their services and discuss operations there in the context of recent events. Session B will see the Committee meet with the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone TD, to conduct a mid-year review of 2016 estimates for public services – Vote 40. Session C will then see the appointment of a Vice Chairperson of the Committee.

Session A will commence at 9.00am, Session B is scheduled to commence at 10.00am and Session C is scheduled to commence at 11.45 in Committee Room 1 tomorrow, Wednesday, 5 October 2016.

Committee Chairman, Jim Daly TD, said “Oberstown Children Detention Campus aims to provide a safe and secure environment for young people who have been sentenced or remanded by the Irish Courts Service. Recent events, however, have brought attention to operations within Oberstown, particularly within the context of recent industrial action, and the Committee now welcome this opportunity to engage with Mr. Bergin. The Committee look forward to hearing an update on, not only the good work that they carry out in Oberstown, but also how incidents such as these can be mitigated in the future.”

“We will then have a chance to hold our first engagement with Minister Zappone, as a Joint Committee, in conducting a review of estimates for public services. These estimates look at expenditure for the Department and Committee Members look forward to a full debate with Minister Zappone.”
