Future of Healthcare Committee to hear from Dr Josep Figueras

11 Oct 2016, 09:39

The Committee on the Future of Healthcare will hear from Dr Josep Figueras, Director of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies tomorrow, Wednesday, 12 October 2016.

Chair of the Committee, Roisin Shortall, says: “As the Committee tasked with examining potential new models for health care in Ireland, with a remit to achieve cross-party consensus on a ten year strategy for health care and health policy in Ireland, it is important that we look at models of healthcare in operation in other countries, get the perspectives of international experts in the provision of healthcare and examine international best practice in the delivery of healthcare. Tomorrow, we will focus on international health care systems when we meet with Josep Figueras who is the Director of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and head of the WHO European Centre on Health Policy in Brussels. Dr Figueras has edited numerous studies on health systems. These include a 2012 study assessing the case for investing in health systems, and an important 2015 WHO study on the impact of the financial crisis on European health systems. His research focuses on comparative health system and policy analysis and we’re looking forward to getting his views on how to reform a health care system and introduce sustainable, long-term changes to work towards a universal, high-quality health system.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 1, Leinster House from 9am on Wednesday, 12 October 2016.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
