25 Oct 2016, 14:35

The Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will discuss recognition of Traveller Ethnicity at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 26 October 2016.

The agenda for tomorrow’s meeting is:

Season A: 9 a.m. Recognition of Traveller Ethnicity [Irish Traveller Movement]
Season B: 10 a.m. Recognition of Traveller Ethnicity [Chief Commissioner, Emily Logan, Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission

Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said: “Having a shared history, common cultural tradition and representing a distinct group within larger society, Travellers have campaigned for a long time to be recognised as an ethnic minority. The issue of Traveller Ethnicity has been the subject of considerable debate in recent years. International bodies and Irish human rights groups have recommended recognising Traveller ethnicity and, in fact, the Justice Committee in the previous Dáil issued its own report on the subject, calling for the State to recognise the ethnicity of the Travelling community. Tomorrow we will meet with representatives from the Irish Traveller movement and with Emily Logan, the Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Authority to discuss the recognition of Traveller Ethnicity.”

The meeting will take place at 9am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday, 26 October 2016.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
